Animal Life Cycles

Chapter 1
1.-             
  • Animals that have no backbone are invertebrates.
  • Most invertebrates are very small
  • The biggest group of invertebrates is the arthropods
  • 95% of the animal species in the world are invertebrates
  • Animals that have a backbone are vertebrates

2.-
Invertebrates:
  • Arthropods –spider
  • Mollusks – snail
  • Sponges – sponge
  • Cnidarians – jellyfish
  • Echinoderms - starfish
  • Flatworms - ocean flatworm
  • Roundworms – threadworm
  • Annelids – earthworm
  • Vertebrates:
  • Fish – tuna fish
  • Amphibians – frog
  • Reptiles – snake
  • Birds – hummingbird
  • Mammals – lion

  • Animals that eat other animals: Carnivores
  • Animals that have no backbone: Invertebrates
  • Animals that eat plants: Herbivores
  • An important group of invertebrates: Arthropods  
  • Animals that eat plants and animals: Omnivores
  • When sperm joins with an egg: Fertilization
  • Animals that produce sperm: Males
  • Animals that produce eggs: Females
  • An important group of vertebrates: Reptiles

  • How do scientists put animals into groups? When animals are the same in many ways.
  • Why are people dangerous for animals? Because people cut down trees and also contaminate the environment.
  • How long can a Galapagos tortoise live for? Galapagos tortoise can live for 150 years.
  • How long does a mayfly usually live for? Mayfly usually lives for just a few hours.
  • Do birds and reptiles give birth to baby animals? No, birds and reptiles lay eggs.
  • How do mammals care for their babies? Mammals feed their babies milk and some big mammals stay with them for many years.


Chapter 7

  • Birds have feathers
  • Birds have no fur or hair
  • Birds lay eggs
  • Birds have wings
  • Birds build nests
  • Birds don’t feed their babies milk

2.-
  • What is courtship? Courtship is when the male birds try to find female birds that they can mate with.
  • Why do birds build nests? They build nest for keep their eggs and chicks safe and warm.
  • What color are birds that build their nests on the ground? They are usually brown and speckled.
  • Why do some birds have to make difficult journeys when they are very young? Because these birds have to migrate every year.

3.-
  • Frigate bird: He pushes his red throat out
  • Blue-footed booby: He shows his big feet.
  • Songbird: He sings.
  • Bowerbird: He builds a special place with bright colored things inside.

4.-
Three things that birds use to make nests:
  • Grass
  • Mud
  • Twigs

Three places where birds build nests:
  • Trees
  • Cliffs
  • On the ground

Four things that chicks learn from their parents:
  • To fly
  • To feed
  • To sing
  • Keep safe

5.-
  • Birds keep their eggs warm.
  • Ostriches lay the biggest eggs.
  • Chicks have a special tooth on their beak.
  • Cuckoos lay their eggs in others birds’ nests.

Chapter 8
1.-
  • Polar bear: It digs a den in the snow so its babies will be warm.
  • Shrew: Its gestation time is only two week.
  • Kangaroo: It grows in its mother's pouch for up to a year after it is born.
  • Elephant: It stays close to its mother until it’s ten years old.
  • Anteater: It carries its babies on its back for the first year.
  • Leopard: It makes marks on trees when it's looking for a mate.
  • Giraffe: It fights with its neck with other males when it's ready to mate.
  • Person: You are one!
